child no. 1 and I were chit chatting in my bedroom, while I was decoupaging a lamp. He was bringing up a conversation that my husband and I were having last night. We found out that they are going to be building a super Walmart close to our housing edition. Of course as home owners we are not thrilled to have a Walmart so close, our home value is a concern. My son says "Mama, having a Walmart in your neighborhood is kind of REDNECK right?" All I wanted to do was LAUGH! But as a Mother, I have to think about the message I am sending him. So, what do I say? Yes,Walmart has a tendency to trash the place up! I mean check out PEOPLEOFWALMART.com and let me know what you think. But I have to approach it differently, which is difficult. Stereotyping is so easy to get caught up in. Especially when a person is the quiescentual, a typical clone. I don't want to endorse grouping people in to categories, even though I am so guilty of it. I just simply say..."People like Mama and Daddy worry about what it could potentially bring into our area, lowering property values and sometimes crime." He just smiled, and shook his head. So I was relieved that he was satisfied with my answer and I didn't flag the stereotyping issue. I would really like for my kids to grow up, with a kinder perspective on life in general. Embrace differences and tolerate them.
